His 1987 nomination was for CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD (1986) in the same category; his third and last nomination until 2006, was for BROADCAST NEWS (1987) in the same category at the 1988 ceremony. Jumping to 2006, he was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE (2005). William Hurt was there at the start with the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jon Favreau. At the beginning, Ross was a General on the hunt for Bruce Banner/Hulk. Since then, he had become Secretary of State as we come into paths with him again in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (2016). Hurt returns again as Secretary Ross in the epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga, AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (2018) and AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019). His last MCU appearence was in Black Widow (2021). William Hurt has passed. On Robin Hood, I was aware of his reputation for asking character based questions, so I had compiled a file on the life of William Marshall. He sought me out when he arrived on set. I handed him the stack. Not sure if I’ve ever seen a bigger smile. RIP.

1/ I’m very sad about the passing of William Hurt. A brilliant actor, who put everything into his work. I had a chance to spend time with when I was younger. My father worked with him in a play called Hurlyburly by David Rabe. They were both amazing in it.

Waking up to the news that actor WILLIAM HURT has passed away is just beyond what I can emotionally comprehend. He wasn’t bombastic and showy. His acting was thoughtful, internal. He drew me into him.
