Boutique releases are produced and delivered by independant distribution studios such as Arrow, Criterion and Kino Lorber. A film is licensed by its current owner to these labels and often times a key member of production such as Director or Cinematographer will be involved in order to give the blu-ray or 4K disc the authentic vision they were going for. They will direct the colour grading process, manage the HDR/Dolby Vision implementation and other stuff. Some directors will want to take control over everything from how the film looks to how the audio sounds. It is very common, especially for 4K releases, for boutique labels to produce a better product than the film's studio. Boutique releases typically come with physical extras and lots of disc extras in the special features that don't make it on the original blu-ray or 4K release from the film studio. In addition, it's typical for boutique releases to have commissioned unique artwork for the poster. Some boutique labels such as Arrow allow for dual posters, where you can pick from the original or the newly commissioned poster by flipping the insert around. Some boutique labels such as Arrow and Second Sight use premium-feeling rigid boxes to host the blu-ray/4K case as well as a variety of different extras. For boutique releases, it's common for booklets to be included. These booklets would speak a lot about the film, how it was made, pictures from production never before seen and essays. Film studios can put this much effort into their releases, however these are premium and collectors editions - such as John Wick: Chapter 4 and Fifth Element (2023 release). Boutiques are solely produced by boutique labels, independant from the film studio. Boutique release can come in all shapes and form from normal blu-ray and 4K cases to steelbooks and digibooks. Some boutiques are limited edition and some sell out very quickly, but there will be a non-limited simple release as well. The quality of the discs will be the same to the limited editiion ones, however some special features may be ommitted.
